Everything You Need to Know About IAMA Theatre's "The Bottoming Process"

Disclosure: IAMA Theatre provided me with two complimentary tickets to see The Bottoming Process. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

IAMA Theatre invited me to check out the world premiere of their newest show, The Bottoming Process, and wow - this production is exactly why I love live theatre!

Written by Nicholas Pilapil and produced in partnership with the Los Angeles LGBT Center, this show is about two writers who meet and fall in love - or something like it. Milo (played by Be More Chill’s George Salazar) is a fledgling writer who’s mostly funny on Twitter. John (played by The Flash’s Rick Cosnett) is a famed novelist. John is nearing middle age, while Milo is flailing through his twenties. John is white - and Milo is definitely not. As they mate, date and cohabitate, they grapple with issues of race, sex, power and the model minority myth, all to find out who’s really on top.

It made my heart so happy to see the AAPI and LGBTQ+ representation both on and off stage. While there were parts of the story I didn’t fully relate to, I still felt seen by this show. The discussion surrounding race and the model minority myth is very much relevant to this day, and the way this show dissects it is brilliant. I love pieces like this that make you think, and the energy and intensity from the entire cast brought me along on the rollercoaster ride of the two main characters’ relationship.

The show is currently playing at the Renberg Theatre (1125 N McCadden Place, Los Angeles, CA 90038) and the performance length is 1 hour and 40 minutes with no intermission. Ticket prices are $35, with all Monday shows being pay what you choose. The show is playing Fridays through Mondays now until 6/12.

Self parking is available for free at the Los Angeles LGBT Center structure across the street from the theatre, or you can find street parking as well.

Huge thank you to IAMA Theatre for having me! And what a treat that we got to hang out with the incredible George Salazar after the show!
